As you are well aware, Republicans passed a very unpopular tax bill in the House and the Senate. This week they are scrambling to reconcile the two different versions of the law in a conference committee. This is an ad hoc panel made up of House and Senate members that attempt to hash out the differences in a bill face-to-face.
We still don’t know yet what will make it into the final version of the law, but it doesn’t look good. Republicans have so far used a special legislative process known as Budget Reconciliation, which only requires 50 plus one votes to pass in the Senate. This process bypasses the Filibuster, and cuts Democrats out of the negotiation entirely.
Since Republicans don’t need Democrats to pass this law, they have rammed this bill with more corporate goodies than Weyland-Yutani can shake a stick at. Conservatives are so far paying for this bill by screwing over everyone else. It will potentially repeal the estate tax, as well as eliminate popular deductions for homeowners, graduate students, teachers, and many other groups. The real kicker is that the little benefits the middle class will receive - in the form of modest tax cuts - will be phased out over the course of a decade. This will affect you.
The Senate is hoping to vote on the updated version of this shitfest as earlier as December 18th, which means that this bill might pass while most Americans are preparing or en route for their holiday travels.
You might be sitting down for one of your Grandma's racist tirades on Barack Obama the very second Congress passes one of the single greatest transfers of wealth in history. This effects everyone, including your racist grandma, and it’s going to happen literally during the one time of year we aren’t supposed to deal with this shit.
It’s normally taboo to talk about politics during the holiday season, but this year we don’t really have a choice. If we want to stop the shittiest things to happen to America in recent memory - and no Grandma, I am not talking about Obama, sit your racist ass down - then we are going to have to get political this season.
That means calling your senators, donating, posting, tweeting, and everything else people will be instructing you to do over the next couple of days.
Chances are that at least one person coming to dinner this holiday season, lives in a state with one or two Republican Senators. Make it your mission to get them to call those shitheads. Hell, turn it into a family activity. Nothing screams holiday cheer quite like screaming at your representatives over G-chat.
As a reminder, the capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121.
