Last night, Republicans passed an unpopular piece of tax legislation that will have ramifications for years to come. After solid victories in Virginia and Alabama, as well as with avoiding the loss of Healthcare coverage, this loss represents a significant blow to the country.
So, what now? How do we keep going when every day the federal government seems to be collapsing in front of and around us, and just around the corner, the GOP seems to be mounting a similar battle with welfare reform?
Many of the people I have talked to have felt frustrated with this battle. They feel disconnected, as if they are waging a giant war alone.
We need to start changing the way we fight these battles. We have been fighting to preserve the federal government, and although we shouldn’t abandon that battle entirely, it’s time to place a greater emphasis on local participation. Not just with elections and campaigns either, but by fostering an engaged citizenry within our communities — by bringing people closer together and making them feel like they are not taking on the weight of the world by themselves.
ConSpot has created a project that connects people to each other in their community - and it could go a long way in building a stronger, and more united resistance by bringing us closer together.
How it works is very simple:
People like you that want to get involved register their skills and availability. People that need help (also maybe you) do the opposite: they register the skills and availability they need from volunteers.
When you match with people in your area, we connect you via email.
From there, you build a relationship with someone in your community that adds to the common good.
What we are doing here is taking the busywork out of civic engagement. No more sifting through the thousands of different organizations and groups in your community or state. The only thing you have to focus on is the connections that we send you (we promise not to spam you). It’s personal, local, and easy to use.
This project will only work, though, if enough people sign up. It relies on having enough connections in enough places to sustain your activism, which means we desperately need your help.
Every completed application and every share is bringing all of us one step closer to a stronger community. A community where we care for one another because all of us are connected, and we are the rising tide that will lift all boats.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up!
The road towards a better, more caring and engaged democracy begins here.
